No. 16 New Synbiotics by α-cyclodextrin and probiotics

Synbiotics?

Synbiotics refer to nutritional supplements combining probiotics (probiotics are live microorganisms thought to be healthy for the host organism) and prebiotics (prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that stimulate the growth and / or activity of bacteria in the digestive system which are beneficial to the health of the body) in a form of synergism.

Probiotics are not stimulated by prebiotics, which would mean symbiosis.
The combination of the two may give a synergistic effect for health.

α-cyclodextrin?

α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) is classified as water-soluble dietary fiber, and it is functional foods material which have a weight reduction effect, a constipation improvement effect, and a decrease effect of cholesterol, triglyceride, hyperglycemia. It arrives at the large intestine, and used to probiotics selectively.

On the other hand, lactobacillus and bifidobacteria have been already well known as probiotics. Prebiotics are usually digested by probiotics.

If prebiotics has stability in the existence of probiotics and can become the bait of probiotics only in the body, it is enable use as synbiotics by the combination.

Growth promoting effect by intake of α-CD

It was recognized that the Bifidobacterium increase more than 3 times in stool after intake of α-CD of 3g per day for 3 weeks. (n = 10)

Frequent bowel movement by intake of α-CD

Frequency of defecation increased more than 1.5 times after intake of α-CD of 3g per day. (n = 10)

Conclusion

  • The growth of bacteria was the slowest by adding α-CD.
But Lactobacillus casei strain shirota can multiply with α-CD as carbon source without glucose.
→ α-CD was hard to be digested by probiotics, it means α-CD is more stability than other prebiotics.
  • It was recognized that the Bifidobacterium increase more than 3 times in stool and frequent bowel movement more than 1.5 times after intake of α-CD of 3g per day for 3 weeks. (Wacker Chemical Corporation)
→ α-CD is assimilated slowly, and finally become nutrient of probiotics coexistence with various organic compounds and bacteria in intestinal environment.

α-CD as prebiotics can be used to ingredient of synbiotics.
