No.56 Development of δTocotrienol-γCyclodextrin complex

Background

Our company have attractive technologies in functional food and personal care fields which raises the water solubility, stability and bioavailability of a functional ingredient by using the inclusion property of cyclodextrin (CD).

We focused "Tocotrienol" as a notable anti-aging ingredient and succeeded in the enhancement of its thermal stability and bioavailability by inclusion with γCD (* please refer to the newest result of research "38th" and "53th" of our homepage for details.).

Recently, a new Tocotrienol-γCD complex (δT3-γCD) containing very high amount of "δ-tocotrienol" as the most powerful antioxidant among tocotrienols has been developed. So in this research, stability and water solubility of δT3-γCD were evaluated for use as functional health food and cosmetics materials.

Annatto seed oil

Extracted oil from annatto seed, it has the highest concentration of δ-tocotrienol, and is naturally tocopherol-free (Tocopherol interferes with tocotrienol benefits.).
Recently, we developed δ-tocotrienol-γCD complex powder "δT3-γCD" by using of annatto seed oil.

> Many health benefits of δT3 and γT3 which have fewer methyl group and show high anti-oxidant effect have been reported.

However,T3 has some issues such as low bioavailability caused by low aqueous solubility.

γCD assisting effective absorption of hydrophobic ingredients

Recently, we found the inclusion of hydrophobic ingredients such as CoQ10 and curcumin with γCD could support their absorption by incorporating easily into bile acid micelle in intestine.

Solubilization of δT3-γCD in the presence of bile acid was explored for enhancement of bioavailability of δT3.

δT3-γCD has enough stability.

Solubility of δT3-CD with bile acid

The highest solubility of δT3 with bile acid was observed in the case of γCD complex.

Conclusions

δT3-CD prepared with Annatto seed oil and γCD was fine and high-dispersible powder.
δT3-γCD showed high stability @40℃、75%RH for 6 months.
The highest solubility of δT3 with bile acid was observed in the case of γCD complex.

> δT3-γCD can be useful for the developments of health or beauty supplements and drinks with high bioavailability.
