No. 74 Extraction of Phytochemical by the use of Cyclodextrin ① Curcumin from Turmeric

Background

Our company has attract attention technologies in functional food and personal care fields which raises the water solubility, stability and bioavailability of functional ingredients by using the inclusion property of cyclodextrin (CD).

Plant materials such as polyphenols are well known as notable anti-aging ingredients that show many health benefits. However, organic solvents such as ethanol are generally applied in extraction of plant materials. So, investigation of water extraction of plant materials can be economically and environmentally challenging work.

In this report, water extraction of plant materials by the use of aqueous CD solution instead of organic solvent was explored.

Expected roles of water extraction of plant materials by inclusion properties of CD.

  • Effective and selective extraction
  • Enhancement of stability and absorbability of extracted ingredients.
  • Masking of unfavorable taste such as bitter taste and pungent taste.

Experiment 1

Extraction of curcumin from turmeric by CDs.

Curcumin

Method

5g of turmeric chip was stirred with 100mL of 2% aqueous CD (α or β or γ) solution for 2days.
After filtration of resulting solution, concentrations of curcumin in the extracts were measured by HPLC.

Result 1

Fig. 1

Curcumin could be extracted by the use of α-CD aqueous solution.

Experiment 2

Dependency of extracted curcumin on concentration of α-CD.

Method

2.5g of turmeric chip was stirred with 50mL of various concentration of aqueous α-CD solution for 2days.
After filtration of resulting solution, concentrations of curcumin in the extracts were measured by HPLC.

Result 2

Fig. 2

Extracted curcumin was increased with higher concentration of α-CD.

Experiment 3

Dependency of extracted curcumin on extraction time.

Method

2.5g of turmeric chip was stirred with 50mL of 2% of aqueous α-CD solution for 6h or 24 h or 48h.
After filtration of resulting solution, concentrations of curcumin in the extracts were measured by HPLC.

Result 3

Fig. 3

Extracted curcumin was increased with longer extraction time.

Conclusion

Water extraction of curcumin was achieved by the use of α-CD.

→ α-CDaq extraction of curcumin can be used for the developments of health drinks of curcumin having high bioavailability!

More functionalities can be added to your products by the use of α-CD having many functions as a dietary fiber (* please refer to the newest result of research "42th", "44th" and "50th"of our homepage for details.).
