No. 58 Effective Solubilization of Resveratrol by α-Cyclodextrin
This research was reported in 30th Cyclodextrin Symposium (Kumamoto, Sep. 12~13, 2013).
Background
Our company have attractive technologies in functional food and personal care fields which raises the water solubility, stability and bioavailability of a functional ingredient by using the inclusion property of cyclodextrin (CD).
Resveratrol (Res) is a kind of polyphenol contained in grape. Res as a notable anti-aging ingredient shows some health benefits. However, the oral bioavailability of Res is poor due to low water solubility. So in this research, improving of water solubility of Res by CD was explored for use as an effective functional health food and cosmetics material having high oral bioavailability of Res.
Resveratrol (Res)
is a kind of polyphenol found in rice bran and wheat bran etc..
Health Benefits
Anti-oxidation / Anti-aging of skin / Anti cancer / Anti-metabolic syndrome / Improving of brain function
The oral bioavailability of Res is poor due to its low water solubility.
In general, the bioavailability of lipophilic ingredients can be enhanced when they get higher aqueous solubility with some solubilizers.
→ In this study, effect of CD on aqueous solubility of Res was explored.
Experiment
Cyclodextrins
Natural-CDs
"α-CD", "β-CD", "γ-CD"
Branched-CDs
higher aqueous solubility than natural-CDs.
Results
Solubility changes of Res depending on using various types of CD.
α-CD and Branched-β-CD were effective solubilizers for Res.
The solubilities of Res at higher concentration (>1%) of β-CD were not explored due to low solubility of β-CD.
Conclusion
α-CD and Branched-β-CD can be potent solubilizers for preparation of highly concentrated Res solution in water.
→ Res-CD system can be useful for the developments of health supplements and drinks of Res with high bioavailability!
More functionalities can be added to your products by using of α-CD having many functions as a dietary fiber (please refer to the newest result of research "42th", "44th" and "50th" of our homepage for details.).
